Leonid Kerbel
   
 

Born in 1962, Leonid Kerbel began his violin studies at the age of four, in Kharkov (Ukraine), his native city under Prof. Kazlovicher. At age 6, he entered the Central Music school of Moscow under Prof. Yankilevich.

He continued his studies in Israel at Tel-Aviv University (Rubin Academy) with Prof. Yair Kless and received since age 12 a scholarship from the American - Israeli Foundation under the direction of the Maestro Isaac Stern. Leonid Kerbel completed his education in Belgium and Germany with Prof. Philip Hirshhorn and Rosa Fain. Leonid Kerbel received master classes from artists such as Isaac Stern, Joseph Gingold, Janos Starker, William Pleath and from chamber music ensembles like the Beaux-Arts Trio and the Borodin Trio. His chamber music experience varies from duos to nonets. He was a leader of the Gertler quartet, Horta quartet, Contrast quartet, Nuove Musiche String quartet, and the Arpeggione Trio.

He was a concertmaster in U.S.A, Israel, and Belgium in the following orchestras: Sewannee Festival Orchestra - U.S.A, Herzelia Chamber Orchestra - Israel, The New Belgian Chamber Orchestra, Nuove Musiche and the Prometheus Ensemble - Belgium.

Leonid Kerbel is a first prizewinner of two violin competitions: the Rubin Academy and the Clairmont violin competitions. Two of his chamber music ensembles were awarded first and second prizes in the Rubin Academy chamber-music competition.

Since 1985, Leonid Kerbel was teaching and performing on a regular basis in the "Sewannee Summer Music Festival" in the USA. He takes part in festivals such as: Festival de minimes, Festival de l'été Mosan, Festival de Mozart and Festival van Vlaanderen. He performs regularly as soloist and concertmaster around Europe, Israel, and the USA and has recorded for Israeli Radio, BRTN, RTBF, and USA National Radio.

In 1998, with the collaboration of his wife, Hagit Hassid Kerbel, he founded the "Musica Mundi Chamber Music course and festival".

In 2005 Leonid Kerbel founded the Trio Sonnetto with the pianist Vitaly Samoshko and the cellist Ilia Laporev. This trio is guided and inspired by world famous pianist Paul Badura-Skoda.
